Tullio MarinoManaging Director of New basket BrindisiHe published some statements to the microphones of the sports newspaper News.Superscommesse.it on thebegin the championship of the Apulian team, a trend that was reversed from the away game in Naples Goals of the club and on his season debut in Fiba European Cup.
On Wednesday evening there was a great performance from New Basket Brindisi in their season debut in the Fiba Europe Cup against Casademont Zaragoza, a team also credited with winning the trophy. The defeat only came in extra time. How do you comment on the race?
“Although we are commenting on a defeat, we have finally seen a good reaction from the team, who have expressed their value on the pitch, both as individuals and as a group.” Up front, as already mentioned, we had built a team, which was able to survive on the European stage with experienced players until the end of the competition. We are sorry that we did not bring much joy to the audience, who put in a fantastic performance on the occasion, but we must take the good performance with us.”
On Sunday we go to Naples and then back to Europe. Do you think the double commitment will have an impact on the minds and legs of the players from the next game onwards? Or will it rather be another impulse to bring about a positive trend?
“If you decide to take part in the cups, you know full well that you will be playing every three days at least until Christmas. We have put together a squad that is capable of competing in both competitions. We were aware that the rigors of the qualifying round would be felt at the start of the season, unfortunately the aftereffects lasted longer than expected. When we returned from Turkey we had several athletes with Covid and that did not allow us to resume training in the best possible way.”
Last year you reached the quarter-finals of the playoffs against Virtus Bologna. The stated goal for this season?
“Last year we had a good championship, especially in the second half. (…) From January onwards we achieved a series of useful results that led us to play in the playoffs against Virtus Bologna. This year, the first goal of the season is redemption, as in all previous years of our Serie A. After this complicated start, the common thought is obviously linked to achieving this goal.”
What do you think a team like Brindisi is currently missing, not just on a technical level?
“Today we definitely lacked a bit of luck, we didn’t have that in this first month when we never really trained. Injuries have already forced us to make a new addition, now another important player is injured and we are assessing the development of the situation very carefully.”
