Syracuse University has announced that Jim Boeheim will be stepping down after 47 years as the basketball team’s head coach. Adrian Autry, currently Associate Head Coach, takes over.
Boeheim, 78, has been a part of Syracuse as a player since 1963. In 1969 he joined the university’s coaching staff as an assistant coach and became head coach in 1976, a position he holds to this day.
Boeheim has been a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame since 2005 and led Syracuse to a national title in 2003 under Carmelo Anthony. He also won three Olympic gold medals as an assistant coach of the US national team in 2008, 2012 and 2016, and two gold medals at the FIBA World Championships in 2010 and 2014.
A total of five Final Four appearances and the second most wins in Division I.
