A warm applause. This is the first ever greeting of Jannik Sinner by Davis’ blue team, who has just landed in Malaga after his extraordinary run at the ATP Finals. World No. 4 immediately made himself available to captain Volandri to train with his other teammates to learn about the conditions and prepare for the match between Italy and Holland on Thursday. A challenge that sees us as favorites but that remains full of pitfalls. Jannik will be the man to beat, but in Davis the matches between the No. 2s and especially the doubles are even more crucial in the event of a tie in the two singles.
Sinner has published some statements that we report from the Supertennis video. “We are united and that is also our strength. They welcomed me with applause after my week in Turin, but it will be the last because now we only have one goal in mind and we have to fight on all counts.” says Jannik. “I’m happy to be part of this crazy team, each of us will try to give 100% and will be very careful about all the points we play. We will try to do our best.
“Physically I’m doing quite well” Sinner continues: “My rest will be essential both today (yesterday, editor’s note) and tomorrow, but if you look at everything together, I’m feeling pretty good. I am pleased that the last event this year is a team competition. The team can give a lot, we spend the whole day together, when we go on the pitch we train very well but also have fun, that’s why we are also a good team and try to show that on the pitch too.”.
Jannik warns against frivolous enthusiasm: “The Netherlands are a very difficult team, we must not underestimate anything, they have two excellent individual players, both of them played their best games at the end of the year on indoor courts that are very similar to these. They are really strong in doubles, but we only have to think about ourselves. We have to be aware of our team, a very good team, and play point by point. Whoever is on the pitch doesn’t play alone, but for the whole team and for Italy. We are all happy to be part of this team, each of us will give 100%.”
