The award ceremony for the final did not go particularly well WTA 1000 in Rome. The controversial decision to start the final at 11pm was the straw that broke the camel’s back in a series of circumstances that deeply angered the public and sparked much controversy. In this climate, a very tense ceremony took place, which was even booed by the audience.
Rybakina was given the floor in front of Kalinina, who had to deliver her speech after the champion’s. Between boos and protests, no one understood what was happening and the players were visibly uncomfortable. Believing they were causing the uproar, they completely eclipsed themselves, leaving Rybakina without a trophy to the point where she had to claim it for herself. In addition, the presiding judge had to say a few words, a completely unusual fact.
