In the short span of thirty-six minutes, the second round began Camila Giorgi at Roland-Garros. The Italian athlete was forced to raise the white flag due to a problem with her right knee and was eliminated by the American at the end of the first set of the match Jessica Pegula. This was a bitter epilogue for Giorgi on Philippe Chatrier’s field, probably due to the worsening of her knee problems, which had already forced her to retire during the Madrid tournament.
The beginning of the game proved extremely difficult for Giorgi as he struggled to play his best. However, her opponent Pegula showed excellent form. After just a few minutes of play, the first set was 4-0 and the prospect of a possible 5-0 was clearly in the American tennis player’s favour.
In this difficult environment, Giorgi managed to recover. The blue tennis player managed to clear the ball 5-0 and somehow managed to win back-to-back games that she seemed able to get back in the game. But Pegula proved relentless on her serve and finished the set 6-2 after just over half an hour of play.
At the end of the set, Giorgi requested a medical time-out due to a problem with his right knee. However, after a brief deliberation, he made the painful decision to retire, abandon the game and not go into the second set.
With this retirement, Giorgi’s run at Roland Garros 2023 ends in the worst possible way. It will be a huge blow for the player and her fans, who are now looking forward to her recovery and return to the pitch.
