Former Blue Top 10 and Davis captain Corrado Barazzutti believes in Jannik Sinner’s talent and the possibility he can beat Novak Djokovic in next Friday’s Wimbledon semifinals. So Barazzutti spoke to agency Adnkronos about the class of the 21-year-old Blue.
“I think Sinner has in his DNA the characteristics of the champion, the great champion, a little bit of everyone is waiting for him. He has already shown he is a champion and has always come very close to these big names. He needs to express those qualities and play his best tennis. He has the potential to beat anyone,” said Corrado.
“He can beat anyone, including Djokovic. Last year he came close when he was two sets down. In this case, Wimbledon isn’t about him having to do things differently than he can, he just has to be at his best. On the other hand, Djokovic is even more motivated, he’s trying to match Nadal to win more Grand Slams than him, I even think he’s trying to win the Grand Slam. He’s absolutely motivated and in top form, we saw that against a Hurkacz who might have played his best match. So it’s going to be a difficult game: Sinner plays against the greatest player in history who wants to keep getting results, in great form and on his favorite surface. But everyone expects Sinner to be number one and it’s time to start doing that,” concludes Davis’ former captain.
It will be the first semi-final at a Grand Slam for Sinner, who has played in quarter-finals at every major in his career. Jannik was the third Italian in the top four in the championship after Berrettini and Pietrangeli. Let’s remember that so far Matteo has been the only Blue to fight for the discipline’s most prestigious trophy.
