Rune is covered in Cincinnati
His back still hurts a bit but the tests were positive and he will start training again on Monday. For example, Holger Rune published a social media post detailing his terms after retiring in Cincinnati during the game against Mackenzie McDonald (thrown in the towel when he was 6-4, 2-0 down). The Dane suffered from back problems, which forced him to withdraw to avoid a more serious injury ahead of the last Grand Slam of the season, which begins on Monday 28th at Flushing Meadows.
“Short update. Small improvements in back pain. Ultrasound, X-ray, treatment and an excellent cooperation between the doctors in New York and Munich and my team, I am sure that I will be ready for training on Monday. Many thanks to everyone,” writes Holger.

However, this is the moment of his retirement against McDonald in Cincinnati.
Unfortunately, Holger Rune had to give up due to injury and sent Mackie McDonald through with the win, 6:4, 2:0 RET #CincyTennis pic.twitter.com/vmMvQPfYXV

Rune, currently ranked No. 5 in the world, but will surely reach his best finish next Monday as No. 4, will play at the US Open for the third time. It’s a slam close to his heart, in 2021 he made his debut in a major’s main draw after qualifying and faced Novak Djokovic in a great match where he impressed in the opening two sets and showed what he’s made of, the Serb’s first comeback and greater experience. Last year he surrendered to Norrie in the third round. It will be crucial to see under what conditions he will present himself in New York to understand if he can be alright and therefore competitive or not.
